Palm Island & Petit St Vincent

Two private-island resorts

Palm Island, a mile off Union Island, and Petit St Vincent (PSV), at the southern tip of the country, are tiny private islands that are each occupied by a single resort. Palm Island, once known as Prune Island, was transformed into a resort by the sailor John Caldwell, who planted its palms.

Petit St Vincent is famous for its cottages spread across 115 acres and its flag system: raise a yellow flag outside your cottage and a Mini Moke brings whatever you ordered; raise the red one and nobody disturbs you. Both islands have beaches as good as any in the Caribbean.

Stay the week

These are places to do very little, very well — snorkelling off the beach, sailing a Hobie Cat, a beach dinner under the stars.

Visit for lunch

Yachts often anchor off Palm Island and PSV; call ahead to check whether day visitors are welcome at the beach bar and restaurant.

Boat trips to the Tobago Cays and Mopion

Both resorts organise trips to the Cays and to Mopion, a sandbar just off PSV with a single thatched umbrella on it.
