Forested hills of St Vincent falling to the Caribbean coast

Dark View Falls

Twin waterfalls in the rainforest

Dark View Falls is a pair of waterfalls high on the leeward side of St Vincent, inland from Chateaubelair. A short forest path and a swaying bamboo bridge lead to the lower fall, and a steeper path climbs on to the upper one; both drop into cool, clear pools you can swim in.

The site has basic facilities, and a modest entrance fee goes towards its upkeep. It sits at the end of one of the most beautiful drives in the Caribbean — the leeward highway, which twists along cliffs above black-sand bays and fishing villages.

Top things to do: Dark View Falls

Swim under the falls

The lower pool is the easy one; the water is cold, fresh and wonderfully clear. Standing under the cascade is a genuinely powerful massage — hold on to the rocks, and watch your footing.

Climb to the upper fall

A steeper path continues up to the second fall. It takes about ten minutes and is usually quieter than the lower pool.

Stop along the leeward coast

Combine the falls with Wallilabou Bay, the fishing villages of Barrouallie and Layou, and a swim at a black-sand beach on the way back.

How to get to Dark View Falls

  • By car: roughly 1 hour 15 minutes from Kingstown up the leeward highway; the turn-off is signposted beyond Chateaubelair.
  • By minibus: leeward vans from the Kingstown terminal run to Chateaubelair; from there it is a short taxi ride or a walk uphill.

Insider tips

  • Water shoes help on the slippery rocks around the pools.
  • After heavy rain the falls are spectacular but the pools can be too strong to swim in safely — follow the site staff’s advice.
  • Mornings are quietest; cruise-ship tour groups tend to arrive late morning.
